Description

Overnight French toast casserole layers thick bread slices with a cinnamon-vanilla custard, baked to golden perfection. This dish is an easy and delicious option for breakfast gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread (or thick Texas toast), sliced
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups half and half
  • ½ cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ sticks butter, softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Coat the inside of a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Layer bread slices in rows, overlapping them slightly for even coverage.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  3. Pour this mixture over the arranged bread slices to ensure every piece is well-coated. Cover the dish with foil and place it in the refrigerator overnight for soaking.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) so it’s ready when you are.
  5. While waiting for the oven to heat up, mix all topping ingredients in a medium bowl until blended smoothly.
  6. Spread this topping evenly across the soaked bread slices before placing it into the preheated oven.
  7. Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until puffed up and lightly golden on top; check occasionally to avoid over-baking.

Notes

Coat your baking dish with butter or cooking spray to ensure easy removal of the casserole.
